Welcome to Sculpture Square

Centre Director’s Message

Greetings from Sculpture Square!

On 2nd October 2009, Sculpture Square celebrated its 10th Anniversary with much fanfare and revelry.

The event, which was graced by the Minister for Information, Communication and the Arts, RADM (NS) Lui Tuck Yew as the Guest of Honor, drew a crowd of over 400 guests comprising of artists, professionals, business associates as well as arts enthusiast

A significant event

The 10th Anniversary event for Sculpture Square was a significant moment as it witnessed the participation of over sixty selected 3D artists (both established and emerging in the augural Small Sculpture Show) whose works were exhibited both at the Chapel as well as the newly renovated SSq Gallery. The enthusiastic participation of Sculpture Square’s inaugural Small Sculpture Show signified that while the Arts Centre was a decade old, its presence was still very much a part of the 3D community in Singapore.

Of equal significance, 2nd October marked a renewal of the Board of Directors. While Dr. Richard Helfer continues to serve as Chairman to the board,  our long serving members, Mr. Sun Yu Li (Co Founder of SSq), Dr. Ho Kah Leong and  Dr. Geh Min stepped down after 10 years of service to Sculpture Square on 2nd October.

Renewal of the Board

On this same day, we welcomed new Members; Mr. Michael Teh (Director - Nature Landscapes Pte Ltd), Mr. Alwyn Cheong (Head Retail Concepts - Luxasia Pte Ltd) and Ms Kumari Nahappan (Sculptor). Ms Marjorie Chu (Gallery Owner / Art Consultant), Mr. Kwok Kian Chow (Director - National Art Gallery) and Mr. Colin Goh (GM Old Parliament House Ltd) remained as Board Members to Sculpture Square. While the Management of Sculpture Square sadly misses the outgoing members, we are confident that the new Board will be as dynamic as the former, striving to create institutional significant memories to Sculpture Square.

Renewal of the Space

The completed physical refurbishments to Sculpture Square were also a cause for celebration as it presented a physical renewed use of the spaces. On the ground floor of the Administration Block, the first two chambers are now a dedicated Sales Gallery promoting local 3D works for sale and management continues to source for regional works in the months to come. The third Chamber, located also on the ground floor, has been designated as the Artist's Studio where Sculpture Square will host Artist in Residency Programmes (AIR) for artists commencing May 2010. Renovations within the Administration Block had carved an additional 870 sq feet of gallery and seminar space on the upper floor. In addition, a revamped Library now allows Management and artists to conduct meetings in a quiet yet conducive environment.

Our Programmes for 2010

Undoubtedly, 2010 promises to be an exhilarating year for us. In addition to our AIR Programme and Core Programmes like Sculpture Carnival in May, 11th Anniversary Show (featuring Mr Lim Leong Seng) in October, OneSingapore Artist (featuring Delia Prvacki) in December; the inaugural Emerging Curators Show in March 2011, Sculpture Square has partnered with Andrewshire Art Services in showcasing fifteen Singapore based artists to Chonnam Provincial Okgwa Museum (July 2010) and Gwang Ju National Museum (September 2010). Furthremore, in the fourth edition to the Singapore Spotlight series (an initiative of The Old Parliament House Limited), Sculpture Square is proud to be the appointed curatorial partner for Singapore Spotlight in South Africa (March 2011).

Placement of Sculptural Works

Sculpture Square is also in the business of the placement of sculptures in public (Hort Park) and commercial spaces (TCC outlets), made possible through alliances and networks between corporations and land owners. This year will see even more sculptures being planned for Bedok Reservoir and Bishan Park.

In closing, I would like to thank all who have helped and contributed to Sculpture Square, in particular previous management & staff, sponsors, board members and artists without which, the Sculpture Square of today would not be possible.

Contributions

On the financial end, while much has been done to stabilize our fiscal situation, we are still in need of funds, particularly so for the maintenance of the building and its infrastructure. We seek generous individuals and corporations for such assistance and should you be motivated to support us, please do so at either Give2Arts (http://give2arts.sg/) or at SG Gives  (www.sggives.org.). As an added incentive, donors will enjoy double tax deductions, as Sculpture Square is a charity with IPC status.

Thank you and it’s been a pleasure communicating our plans to all,

Sincerely

Tenny Kwan
